Police overtime & unpaid fines are causing huge financial deficits in Cyprus

By in

This week the Cyprus Auditor-general cited the two main operational problems for the Ministry of Justice were unpaid fines and excessive funding for overtime in the police force. Since 2015, timely payment of fines has increased substantially however it was reported that Cyprus policemen had been turned into debt-collectors. Regarding police overtime, officials stated that the reason for the spike in funding is not only a result of understaffing, however also the discontinuation of reimbursing police for extra hours worked, which then accumulates as additional time off duty.
