Minor offenders can be given alternative to court in Cyprus

The Cyprus Justice Minister has announced a decision approved by the cabinet to minors (under the age of 18) who have broken the law or committed a misdemeanor from now on will be reprimanded without involving the judicial system. This marks the start alternative legal processes for young offenders in Cyprus.

An official representative finalised the legislation on minors who have broken the law, and stated that it will allow underage offenders aged14 – 18 to have no criminal liability or ongoing criminal records. It is hoped that this approach will keep youngster reoffending and out of prisons which can of course taint or influence their actions in a negative way. Also this type of retribution can also cause problems for finding a job later in life.
