International consternation as Trump administration pulls out of Paris climate deal

In a statement, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italy’s Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni warned the President that the Paris Agreement could not be renegotiated. They said they remained committed to the irreversible accord and saw it as ‘a cornerstone in the co-operation between our countries, for effectively and timely tackling climate change’ French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed his concern that the decision means the US is ‘turning its back on the world’.

President Trump reportedly called UK Prime Minister Theresa May to discuss his decision to pull the US out of the Paris Agreement to which she expressed her disappointment to the move. ‘The agreement provides the right global framework for protecting the prosperity and security of future generations, while keeping energy affordable and secure for our citizens and businesses.’
