The European Union should not stop its accession talks with Turkey despite a lack of progress and questions regarding the rule of law in the country according to Germany’s EU minister.
According to sources, the European Commission is due to hand out its most integral report on talks with Turkey since the country launched its bid to join the European Union over a decade ago.
Michael Roth is said to have said at a recent meeting of EU ministers in Luxembourg that it is the responsibility of the officials in Turkey whether they decide that they want to become part of the European Union and its community of values.
However, Gernot Bluemel, Austria’s minister, stated that the talks should be stopped. Following this, Bluemel went on to express the belief that Austria does not think that Turkey should become a member of the European Union.
