Cyprus Interior Ministry Faces Over 1,400 Pending Citizenship Applications

This week the Cyprus Interior Ministry have announced that they are facing over 1,400 pending applications from the citizenship by investment programme that the government was forced to abandon in October following several damning reports in the media.

The government had to stop offering the programme earlier this month following an undercover video revealed a number of former house representatives offering to help an imaginary Chinese businessman with a criminal record to obtain citizenship.

That report was found to be sufficient evidence, prompting the EC to commence legal procedures against Cyprus, which was accused of granting citizenships to untrustworthy individuals.

The Ministry said it has yet to process 693 applications from investors and 725 dependents that were received by November 1st, when the scheme was canceled.
