Cyprus: Discussions on Minimum Wage to Start Shortly

Last Friday, the Minister of Labour in Cyprus about the beginning of negotiations with employers regarding the increase in the national minimum wage.

The main reason for discussing the problem was because of a high level of unemployment. And now the government is trying to return it to the pre-crisis level. The problem is that most working citizens receive very low salaries, therefore, many more people prefer not to work and receive unemployment benefits. In this case the most unprotected are young professionals, clerks, shop assistants and child-care workers. A minimum wage decree is applicable for this occupations only.

Political parties and trade unions are involved in this work, and President Nikos Anastasiades himself singled out this problem as one of the main issues during his election campaign.
