China: Skype disappearing from app stores

By in

The latest action of China’s authorities in respect of efforts to increase scrutiny of internet applications and eventually protect personal privacy and prevent online terrorist activity, resulted in Skype disappearing from app stores such as the one of Apple Inc. and others. In this manner, the usual actions of the authorities include removing apps with confidential communication being available to users and generally use overseas social media, real name authentication laws and storage of user information for surveillance purpose. Although the existence of alternatives and the fact that Skype’s services are still available for those who already have the app installed, the disappearance of Skype have has been perceived as overly restrictive by Chinese people.
