Around 1 Million People Gained Citizenship of an EU Member State in 2016

In 2016, a total of 4,660 people obtained Cypriot citizenship according to data sources. 24.8% were Russians, 15.6% Greeks and 7.2% from the UK according to Eurostat. This shows an increase of 40% was registered compared to 2015.

Additionally, in 2016 approximately 995,000 persons acquired citizenship of an EU member state, up from 841,000 in 2015 and 889,000 in 2014. 12% were former citizens of another EU member state of the total number of persons gaining citizenship of one of the EU member states in 2016 whereas the majority were non-EU citizens or stateless.

Moreover, the largest group gaining citizenship were citizens of Morocco (101,300 persons, of whom 89% acquired citizenship of Italy, France or Spain).

This is ahead of citizens of Albania (67,500, 97% obtained citizenship of Italy or Greece), India (41,700 nearly 60% acquired British citizenship), Pakistan (32,900, more than half acquired British citizenship).
