US Ask Cyprus to Tighten Port Access to Russia Amid Global Sanctions

The United States expect to see further assurances on the ability of Cyprus to deny port access to Russian naval vessels, according to the US Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs.

The Secretary of State went on by saying that while in Cyprus, “we have been covering a lot of ground and making significant progress on anti-money laundering reforms” and added that since the financial crisis back in 2013, there has been ongoing work in that space that has significantly progressed between Russia and the world, however tighter measures were going to have to come from Cyprus, who have a well-established alliance with the Russian Federation which has only been strengthening in recent years.

The US official assured that there is certainly desire in the United States to proceed with the reforms against Russia. “When we look at the Eastern Mediterranean Security Act as well as the Energy Partnership Act of 2019, it is why Cyprus factors in that space and why we are looking to have a closer bilaterally and multilaterally relationship with them” the US official stated.
