Singapore: New legislation hoped to crack down on false news reports

The Law & Home Affairs Minister has a mission to regulate Singapore’s online space and combat the publishing and spreading of false news articles. This week, Mr Shanmugam said consultations with shareholders such as media professionals on the legal framework will be held in the second half of this year, with regulations expected to be introduced in early 2018. Speaking at a two-day conference on news credibility in Singapore, he stated: “In some way, the legislation has to achieve working with technology platforms to de-legitimise false news articles and help the general public identify what is fake news.”
