Russia has rejected suggestions as absurd that it was hindering talks of reunification however restated that efforts to achieve a settlement at all costs was unacceptable. A spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry stated that the anti-Russia accusations were a decoy designed to hide the underlying issues, such as the external security issues Cyprus is experiencing, that were required to be addressed as part of a settlement. “It is disappointing that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council are not involved in the discussion of these issues,” the spokesperson went onto say. “It is obvious that the system of guarantees that was forced on Cyprus under the 1960 London and Zurich agreements is ineffective”; reiterating that Moscow was sure that the integrity of Cyprus’ territorial post-reunification could be assured by the UN Security Council.
