President Anastasiades has stated that he believes that Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council, could attain a more active role in the external dimension of the Cyprus problem.

This would also involve new security arrangements which would exclude the current obsolete ones.

Anastasiades speaking during a recent reception at the Russian Embassy in Nicosia, reaffirmed his commitment to immediately engaging in new talks and negotiating a solution in the framework set by the UN Secretary-General, the relevant UN resolutions and the EU values and principles.

The Russian Ambassador assured that Russia is not going to retreat from its position on the Cyprus problem and will always stand for finding a formula of settlement without enforcing fabricated timeframes and schemes, which will suit both the needs and aspirations for both communities. This follows his confirmation that Russia also wants to see a united and peaceful Cyprus, according to sources.
