UOB report Singapore to exceed Japan in economic size by 2025

A new report released by the UOB (United Overseas Bank) in Singapore on Friday stated that South-east Asia's economy is anticipated to be bigger than Japan's by 2025, according to new projections. Japan is currently the third largest economy in the world in terms of GDP, the fourth largest by purchasing power and is the world's second largest developed economy.

The rise of China and the establishment of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) next year is expected to provide new catalysts for the region's growth, reported economists after conducting various extensive research.

Even if Asean's economy from here on grows only at two-thirds of its average growth rate between 2001 and 2013, it could exceed US$4 trillion by 2020 and US$9 trillion by 2030, the economists said. Which means that it would surpass the UK's economy after 2020 and eventually surpass Japan's by 2025.
