This week, Singapore and the UK broadcasted the launch the creation of a future alliance to strengthen and develop relations between the two influential jurisdictions in Europe & Asia respectively.

Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ms Vivian Balakrishnan and the UK Foreign Secretary Mr Jeremy Hunt made respective statements about the partnership, reiterating the historical links between both nations.

The leaders both stated that 2019 will be a significant year for both Singapore and the UK, as it marks not only the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in Singapore,but also the “beginning of a new era” for the UK as it makes plans to exit the European Union.

The foundations of the two nations shared beliefs include working together to embrace the following subjects that both parties feel extremely passionate and committed to achieving:

  • A free trade agreement and the creation of mutually beneficial international law.
  • A strong commitment to the rules-based multilateral system.
  • The development of innovation by sharing technologies.
  • Prosperity & peace in the Asian Pacific regions.

The partnership will celebrate both countries’ shared achievements and launch new collaborative initiatives, focusing on four main areas of cooperation, more specifically:

  1. Sustainable business & innovation.
  2. The digital economy
  3. Security & defence.
  4. Education, culture & youth.

Mr Hunt is on a two-day official visit to Singapore at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Longe, where they reaffirmed the strong and growing ties between the UK and Singapore. While the statement was clear regarding the agreed areas of collaboration, more specific details on the about the new Singapore-UK friendship will be released at a later date.
