Egyptian billionaire willing to buy an island to help ease refugee situation
Egyptian billionaire, Naguib Sawiris, stated that there is no limit to what he is willing to spend, in order to buy an island from Greece or Italy to provide the arriving refugees a new home, and new hope.
According to Mr. Sawiris, Greece and Italy have dozens of empty islands that could handle 100,000 to 200,000 people. The CNN reported who interviewed Mr. Sawiris suggested that many will consider this idea a ridiculous idea as he has rejected it and called it ‘humanitarian act’.
The solution as he says is very simple. All that has to be done by Greece or Italy is to sell one of their unoccupied islands and he will take care of the rest. He is planning to build homes and work places for the refugees, so that they will have a good standard of living. Until the war is over, and when their country will be free again, they will be able to stay there. After that, the refugees will have the option of going back to their home country or to stay in the new country that Mr. Sawiris will build for them.
"All I need is the permission to put these people on this island. After that I don't need anymore from them. I'll pay for the island, I'll provide jobs, I'll take care of the logistics. I know I can do that."
As he stated during his CNN interview, no agreement was made with any of the countries. However he wishes that after the interview, the countries will speak with him to arrange meetings to help him with the solution.
