In a recent UK criminal law case Khrapunov vs JSC BTA Bank, Mr Ilias Khrapunov, son-in-law to former Russian banker Mr Mukhtar Ablyazov, has reportedly refused to visit the UK to be cross-examined this week, regarding assets he is has been accused of having in his possession on behalf of Mr Ablyazov; assets which are now tied up over claims of theft from Mr Ablyazovs former employer JSC BTA Bank.

However, the UK Court of Appeal has forbidden Mr Khrapunov’s offer to be cross-examined where he is currently residing in Switzerland, or via video conference. Mr Khrapunov’s assets are currently subject to a UK global freezing order where he faces being arrested and extradited to Russia, Ukraine or his birthplace of Kazakhstan once he enters the UK.
