Why is the north-south divide in Cyprus an issue that remains a stalemate?

As time progresses, Nicosia remains the last divided capital city in the world, UN officials are wondering what the hold up is regarding negotiation talks. Turkey’s foreign minister as outlined in his interview with a Greek Newspaper last week explains why the “Cyprus problem” has not been solved to date. Ankara has always remained firm to maintain the system of guarantees and of keeping Turkish troops in Cyprus following a solution. While one side claims that the Greek Cypriots were not prepared to go the extra mile to reach a settlement, the other side purports “the overwhelming majority of Turkish Cypriots will not accept a settlement without Turkish guarantees”.
