Singaporeans’ preference of Chinese, Malays, Indians as new Singaporean citizens

According to a survey, Singaporeans are more willing to accept people from China, Malaysia, India and others (CMIO) including Eurasia, as new citizens. In contrast, they do not feel comfortable enough if the new citizens are coming from Korea, Filipinas, UAE, or Africa. The main reason for that is the fact that Singaporeans value the importance of race.

The CMIO framework has its roots back to 1824 when the first census was produced. As Dr. Mathew Mathews, study’s researcher, underlined the main intent of CMIO framework is not to discriminate people, but contrary, to ensure that people from different ethnicities will be respected and their rights will be preserved.
