Cyprus tops the list of corrupt countries in the EU
According to the new Eurobarometer report, the majority of Cypriot companies believe that corruption is widespread, making the island the leading EU country in this category, followed by Greece and Romania with 96% respectively.
This figure increased to 100% in Cyprus from 84% in 2015, which is the biggest change in the EU during this timeframe.
In general, 38% of EU companies consider patronage and nepotism a problem. There are also significant country-level differences on this issue. As in 2015, the highest proportion of businesses in which this problem is observed is registered in Romania. In Cyprus, about seven in ten companies mention patronage and nepotism as a problem, and approximately six in ten companies in Greece. On the other hand, less than one in ten companies in Denmark, the UK and Ireland believe that such corruption problems exist.
