Climate Change to have Heavy Impact on Cyprus
In the coming years, significant climate changes are forecast in Cyprus. This will take their toll on not only living conditions of the population, but also will greatly affect the agricultural sector of the economy.
In her speech at the conference on winemaking and climate changes organised by the Technological University, Commissioner for the Environment Ioanna Panayiotou said that, according to the climate model, in the coming years it is expected that the inflow of water in the Caspian region will decrease by 23%.
It is also worth noting that agriculture contributed to climate change by 10%, and it will be significantly affected by the consequences of these changes. "The threat to rural ecosystems is already evident, as soil fertility and water resources are under the greatest pressure." said Panayiotou adding that measures should be taken to improve the environmental performance of production systems.
