Australian UN police leave the Cyprus buffer zone after 53 years
After 53 consecutive years in the Republic of Cyprus, Australia has announced plans to remove its civilian police unit from the island at the end of the month, since 1964 which marked the start of the UN peacekeeping presence. There are currently seven Australian police officers serving in the United Nations Police (Unpol), which have a total of 67 officers serving in Cyprus from 14 different countries. The Unficyp regime (Unify Cyprus) has been active since April 1964 under Unpol guidance. Its aims are to maintain and restore law and order within the UN controlled buffer zone.
