Russian watchdog for consumer’s safety has detected Ractopamine, a hormone used to enhance the growth of meat in recent imported pork and beef from Brazil. The government has banned the import of this product since December 1.
Is likely that Brazil will request consultations on the Dispute Settlement Body of the World Trade Organization if this problem is not resolved by both parties soon. Russia is an important market, for Brazil’s beef and pork products, exporting 230,395 tons to Russia from January to October this year alone. However, Brazil has a wide range of destinations for export, having Russia representing only 3% of its total exports. This may have bigger impacts in Russian internal market than in the export market of Brazil.
