On Thursday 18th January, Emirates Airlines released a statement that it had done a USD $16 billion deal to buy 36 Airbus A380 superjumbos days after the European manufacturer said that it would have to suspend without new orders.
Emirates are said to have ordered 20 of the double-decker aircraft with options for an additional 16 and deliveries are scheduled to start in 2020.
With regards to the A380, Emirates is the world’s biggest customer with 101 in its fleet and 41 more firm orders previously placed.
CEO, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, and airline’s chairman stated that, ‘this order will provide stability to the A380 production line’.
Emirates said that with this new order, it will have commitments for a total of 178 A380s that will be worth USD $60 billion.
This particular deal was due to be signed during the Dubai Airshow in November 2017 but was delayed without explanation amid reports of difficult negotiations.
