Over the past few weeks a series of tragic events have occurred: a double murders in Strovolos, a shootout in Ypsonas in which a policeman was seriously injured whereby a man was shooting outside his house in Trachoni.

As a result, a number of public hearings have been organised in the region. The public unsatisfied with the fact that the police do not conduct preventive measures to combat crime. Also some politicians, in particular the Mayor of Paphos, directly accused the police of corruption and having links to organised crime. In its turn the police refer to the lack of the necessary legal tools to fight crime more effectively.
