Last month, members of the European Parliament asked members of the EU to provide protection to Maria Efimova, the source of information of the murdered Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galicia. However, on Tuesday it became known that in case of coming to Cyprus Yefimova faces arrest.
Caruana Galicia, who died in a car-bomb attack, had documents at her disposal, the authenticity of which was confirmed by Efimova, according to which the wife of the Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat, was accused of having connections with an offshore Panamanian company, Egrant Ince. Also, the journalist accused the prime minister of trying to present Efimova as a Russian spy who had to intervene in the elections in Malta and acted on behalf of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
Fearing for her safety, Maria Efimova moved and sought political asylum in a country of the European Union, that she does not want to disclose.
