Court ruling rejected after compromise over title deeds

The Cyprus government will appeal two district court decisions after a law designed to help so-called trapped property buyers went against the constitution. Following the recent rulings, implemented after banks objected to the legislation, the land registry was forced to suspended procedures. The court said the legislation was in direct violation of Article 26 of the constitution, which gives individuals the right to enter freely into any contract. It also stated that policymakers have no right to interfere in previously established contracts that preceded the law.
